With its beautiful weather and miles of beaches, San Diego is a great place to travel with your family. There are plenty of activities and attractions to keep the kids happy, both close to the hotel and farther afield, including:
The New Children’s Museum – Located four blocks from the conference hotel, the New Children’s Museum is interactive, allowing kids to play and create. The museum was designed to appeal to children from “toddler to teen” but is best for the younger set. Admission is $10; hours vary, with the museum closed on Wednesdays.
USS Midway Museum – The USS Midway Museum allows visitors to “experiencing life at sea aboard one of America’s longest-serving aircraft carriers.” Admission includes over 60 exhibits with a collection of 25 restored aircraft. The USS Midway is located in downtown San Diego – a short walk from the conference hotel. Admission is $18/adults & $10/kids; open daily from 10am to 5pm.
Balboa Park – The Park contains more than a dozen museums, gardens, outdoor playgrounds, and even a puppet theater. There really is something for everyone! The Park is free, with admission varying by attraction.
San Diego Zoo – Located in Balboa Park is the famous San Diego Zoo. Visitors can “view rare giant pandas, cuddly looking koalas, reptiles of various shapes and sizes and many more interesting species.” Hours are extended in the summer for the popular Zoo at Night. Admission starts at $42 for adults, $32 for children.
If you’re willing to travel a little farther out, you can visit Coronado, Old Town, SeaWorld, Legoland, Belmont Park, the Birch Aquarium, or the San Diego Zoo’s Safari Park. I’m a fan of taking visitors to see the tide pools and the seals in La Jolla – fun & free! Check out San Diego’s visitor website http://www.sandiego.org for other ideas or ask the locals about their favorite family destinations – the options are seemingly endless.
