Veggin’ out in San Diego

Many conference attendees ask, “where can I get vegetarian or vegan food around here?”  Vegetarians and vegans, as well as individuals with other dietary needs, such gluten-free, should have choices when they are out of town.

For starters, check out the Happy Cow for San Diego, http://www.happycow.net/north_america/usa/california/san_diego/

While downtown San Diego (around the conference hotel) doesn’t have an abundance of “vegan only” places, most California restaurants will accommodate dietary requests, if you just ask!  Check the restaurant guide descriptions here: SAA_Host_Comm_2012_DiningGuide

Downtown recommendations:

Mint Thai Downtown, Veg-friendly! Thai food with many veggie options, tofu and mock duck. All soups are veggie broth based. Nice interior. Lots of seating. Has outdoor seating. Accepts credit cards.

Pokez, Veg and vegan friendly! Grungy cafe popular with youngsters. Features an extensive range of Mexican dishes with some vegetarian options including tacos, burritos, tostadas, and breakfast all day. Vegans to specify no dairy, etc. Large portions. *Be mindful of the service, sometimes it is super slow and not the most accommodating!  They do have a delicious soy chorizo burrito!

La Gran Tapa, Authentic Spanish restaurant that is conscious of vegetarian diet. The menu denotes vg for vegan and vgo for vegan optional.
